Severe Tooth Decay:
When a cavity has destroyed so much of the tooth structure that it cannot be repaired with a filling or a crown.

At Bright Whites Dental in Franconia, Alexandria, VA, our primary goal is always to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible through preventive care, fillings, or root canal therapy. However, there are certain situations where a tooth is too badly damaged to be saved, or where its presence threatens the health of your surrounding teeth and gums. In these cases, a tooth extraction becomes necessary.
Whether you need a simple extraction for a severely decayed tooth or a surgical extraction for impacted wisdom teeth, our dental team provides safe, gentle, and compassionate care. We utilize advanced techniques and effective anesthesia to ensure your extraction procedure is as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

A tooth extraction may be recommended for several reasons, including:
When a cavity has destroyed so much of the tooth structure that it cannot be repaired with a filling or a crown.
Severe gum disease can destroy the bone and tissues supporting the tooth, causing it to become loose and require removal.
If a tooth is fractured or broken below the gum line due to an accident or injury and cannot be saved.
Sometimes, one or more teeth need to be extracted to alleviate severe crowding and create room for other teeth to shift into their proper alignment during orthodontic treatment (like clear aligners or braces).
Third molars (wisdom teeth) often do not have enough room to emerge properly. They can become impacted (locked in the bone and soft tissue), causing pain, infection, and damage to adjacent teeth.
Performed on teeth that are fully visible above the gum line. The dentist uses an instrument called an elevator to gently loosen the tooth and forceps to carefully remove it.
Required for teeth that have broken off at the gum line or have not fully erupted into the mouth (such as impacted wisdom teeth). This procedure involves making a small incision in the gum tissue to access and remove the tooth, and may require removing some surrounding bone.

Your comfort is our top priority. Here is what you can expect during an extraction at Bright Whites Dental:
No, the procedure itself should not hurt. We use highly effective local anesthesia to ensure you are completely numb before we begin. You will feel a sensation of pressure or pushing as the tooth is loosened, but no pain. If you feel any sharpness, let us know immediately so we can administer more anesthetic.
Recovery typically takes a few days. It is normal to experience some mild swelling and discomfort after the anesthesia wears off. We will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions, which include taking over-the-counter pain relievers, applying ice packs to reduce swelling, and eating a soft food diet for the first few days.
A dry socket occurs when the protective blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves prematurely, exposing the underlying bone and nerves. This can be quite painful. To prevent a dry socket, you must avoid smoking, drinking through a straw, vigorous rinsing, or spitting forcefully for at least 24 to 48 hours after the extraction.
Unless the extracted tooth is a wisdom tooth or was removed for orthodontic reasons, we highly recommend replacing it. Leaving a gap in your smile can cause the surrounding teeth to shift, leading to bite problems, difficulty chewing, and bone loss in the jaw. We offer excellent replacement options, including dental implants and dental bridges.
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to develop and often emerge in the late teens or early twenties. Because human jaws have become smaller over time, there is frequently not enough room for these four large molars. They can become impacted, grow in sideways, push against other teeth, or partially emerge, creating a flap of gum tissue that easily traps food and bacteria, leading to painful infections.
If you only receive local anesthesia (numbing shots), you will be perfectly fine to drive yourself home.
